Hunting Down Incel Extremists

I will never forget the day I sat down to write a stream we had booked through a PR person we’d worked with for years, and unfortunately, who we trusted. I opened up their Bandcamp album page and hit play on the first track. Pretty basic death metal, but as I scanned the song titles I saw some misogynist dog whistles and decided to check the lyrics for one song with “sluts” in the titles. Maybe these guys like to share the peen around, I thought. Two lines in and I realized it was actually a song about raping feminists. Needless to say, the stream didn’t make it up on the site and our relationship to that PR person died pretty quickly. I’m not saying these guys are incels, but I’m not saying they’re not incels, either.

Unfortunately, there are men who aren’t interested in doing the inner work to cultivate self-awareness. They don’t want to see the true roots of their frustration with women — the very same system that taught them women should be nothing more than bobble-headed sex dolls. And instead of just buying one of the bobble-headed sex dolls, they turn to other blind men to follow into an abyss of self-hatred disguised as misogyny. And it really is self-hatred. In utero, we all started with vaginas.

Patriarchy has preached that women can’t think critically, and are undeserving of respect. According to many of the great male minds of our history, and the less great ones of today, I’m not even capable of writing this sentence, let alone being the Executive Editor of this publication.

But luckily, women are in fact capable of much more than these troglodytes give us credit for, and it’s their smug belief in their superiority that is their downfall. Julia Ebner is a German investigator who specializes in going undercover with terrorist groups online, jihadists, white supremacists, and misogynists. This VICE special tells the story of her undercover work in the “black pill” community of extreme misogynists, aka “involuntary celibates.” She works with security services to infiltrate these groups and expose their terroristic plans. She’s a real hero.

Extreme far-right terrorism is increasing. Julia Ebner believes in order to deal with this threat, you have to fully understand the extremist groups. From neo-Nazis to ISIS hackers, Julia Ebner goes undercover online to some of the darkest corners of the internet.

Among these extremist groups are the ‘incels’, or ‘involuntary celibates’, an online community of deeply misogynistic men who believe that women are to blame for their sexual frustration. Julia infiltrates these group’s online forums, gaining important insights and passing on information to the security services.
