Cold Grim Lurching Sinister Spacious and Anguish are some of the words that come to mind as I listen to the new Curse All Kings song “As the Spirits Watch Over Us, We Reciprocate.” Their new album entitled Feral Earth comes on March 8th via Breath Sun Bone Blood // Cyclic Law. Now, I ask for 9 minutes of your time so that their majestic and bleak soundscape can brighten your day!
The intention behind “As the Spirits Watch Over Us, We Reciprocate” is grounded in a 2013 essay by Peter Grey entitled Rewilding Witchcraft. It is a call to action in defence of a world on the brink of environmental collapse. In the essay Grey states, “If your witchcraft, like mine, speaks with animal spirits, is made from plants and flowers and roots and bark and seeds, it cannot continue to pretend that we are not suffering. It has to speak. It has to lament, it has to cry, it has to then be unreasonable. We need to be intimately acquainted with death, as these are the rites over which our witchcraft presides…”.
