Growing up in California in the 80’s, I saw first hand how Reaganomics dealt a death blow to the mental health institutions of this State. Basically, the powers that be decided to cut funding to many of the hospitals and programs that served people with mental health issues. What you saw were humans that needed mental care just roaming the streets of San Francisco and other cities around the state. Now in 2014, America has locked over a million of Americans with different mental health needs in jail. This BBC documentary Bedlam Behind Bars takes a hard look at how this government has failed many of it citizens! Since the 80’s, things have not gotten better, but worse for those that need help!
