If someone were to ask you, “what do you like about music?” — what would you answer? On the surface, it seems like a stupid question, but it’s not. What do I like about music? It’s a product of collaboration, of building, of harmonizing disparate sounds, objects, human beings into a whole composition that expresses emotions, ideas, and, in my opinion, our entire purpose for being alive. That’s where my mind is going while I watch the stunning instrumental performance by WANG WEN for their track “Forgotten River.” This is an uplifting, soaring composition, but the same can be said for the most devastating funeral doom song. Listening to, and especially watching, this small group of humans manipulate instruments to emit sounds that play off one another to form a massive sonic tapestry feels like magic. Music is how we communicate with the universe. Music is how we step out of our limited minds and into our infinite souls.
