Take the Post-Metal Inward Journey with GUHTS “Eyes Open”

GUHTS describes their debut EP blood feather as “the battle against false consciousness,” and I think in 2021 we all need to understand that this is an internal battle. When I think about false consciousness, I think about the corporate takeover of Pride, where what was once a movement to secure human rights—rights that still aren’t secured—became an era of plastic rainbow landfills. I think about IKEA’s “Juneteenth” menu. I think about McDonald’s collabbing with Travis Scott and BTS at a time when childhood obesity is skyrocketing.

False consciousness is external; it’s a money-maker; it raises share prices and lowers human value. Real consciousness is trusting your inner wisdom, guidance that’s been passed down in your DNA for thousands of years, knowledge that’s traveled with your soul for eternity. Real consciousness is asking questions of those who claim to guide us in exchange for money and power. The way GUHTS tears into my skin with their searing melodies and bludgeoning beats makes it impossible for me to swallow the opiates of the masses. Their EP blood feather comes out August 6th — pre-order it here. Today we’re streaming “Eyes Open,” so dive inside yourself as you listen to it below.
