Punishment, Oppression, Heresy, Celebration… American Ghoul

American Ghoul

One thing is inevitable for us all, and that is Death. Bay Area photographer Daniel Vasquez captures the human obsession with death in a striking and gorgeous way under the name American Ghoul. His figures are ghostly and powerful, and invoke the occult and the mystery of the unknown realms. There’s a cinephile quality to his work that makes his imagery look like stills from some amazing horror/fantasy film rife with symbolism and suspense. His figures are almost exclusively female, with only the genderless Reaper as a foil; scenes of women enacting religion’s punishment and oppression of their minds and bodies, and of the celebration and release that nature and heresy allow them. Vasquez’s work is utterly captivating, and all of his photos are available as 8.5 x 11 lustre prints from the American Ghoul shop on the CVLT Nation Bizarre. Check out what he has on offer below…

Meghan MacRae grew up in Vancouver, Canada, but spent many years living in the remote woods. Living in the shadow of grizzly bears, cougars and the other predators of the wilderness taught her about the dark side of nature, and taught her to accept her place in nature's order as their prey. She is co-founder of CVLT Nation.
