One thing is inevitable for us all, and that is Death. Bay Area photographer Daniel Vasquez captures the human obsession with death in a striking and gorgeous way under the name American Ghoul. His figures are ghostly and powerful, and invoke the occult and the mystery of the unknown realms. There’s a cinephile quality to his work that makes his imagery look like stills from some amazing horror/fantasy film rife with symbolism and suspense. His figures are almost exclusively female, with only the genderless Reaper as a foil; scenes of women enacting religion’s punishment and oppression of their minds and bodies, and of the celebration and release that nature and heresy allow them.
