When I need a heavy dose of truth delivered smooth over thumping beats, I listen to South Memphis artist Lukah. We’ve covered his 2021 record Why Look Up, God’s In The Mirror a few times on these pages because he’s got the perfect balance of timeless sounds and timeless wisdom. Earlier this week he released a short film by the same name, and it has only made me love this sick album more. It’s a story of our inner gods and demons, our inner Jesus and Judas, and the contrast between the heaviness of earth and the light of the universe. At least, that’s what I see, but I think I’m going to have to watch it a few more times, because there’s a lot of nuance packed into the stunning cinematics of these 14 minutes. He just released a new record Raw Extractions and you can order it and stream it here. Right now, walk the path of Why Look Up, God’s In The Mirror with Lukah.
I’ve been through so much good and bad. So whenever I look in the mirror I remind self, you are the creator of your world and all that’s good in it, but you are also a curator of your own destruction. It’s a self-awareness or knowledge of self-statement or affirmation if you will.
LUKAH, The Hip Hop Renaissance Griot Speaks! In-Depth LUKAH Interview PART 2
It can be hard and scary to look at oneself and accept who and what you are. Despite the fear, the fact is, you are the ONE! You are god, you can make things work for self if you really put your mind to it. Mind and spirit is God.
