When I was a kid, I used to lie awake some nights fighting anxious thoughts about other kids my age. I would think about all the horrible things adults did to children, and be filled with panic and fear because no one would help them. Everything would get loud and spin and I would try to force myself not to think about it, or I would imagine I was a vigilante vampire who’s soul purpose in life was to save those kids by terrifying the adults that wanted to hurt them. What I didn’t understand then was that I didn’t feel safe or protected, and now I picture that young, panicking girl and I take her in my arms and reassure her that I’m there to protect her.
Watching this new video for Dead Waves track “Innermost,” knowing that these two brothers wrote this psychedelic folk song about the misunderstood, abandoned children many of us were, makes me feel less alone. The track is produced by Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey), and it’s off their Abandoned Children EP — get it here. The melancholy drone and haunted vocals make me think about all the ways we grow up to hide our inner children rather than embrace them. Hide them behind steel, gold, diamonds, paper, pretending we’re happy and they’re long gone. Today we’re happy to be sharing the video for DEAD WAVES “Innermost” with you below…
“Innermost” is about feeling empathy for all the abandoned children who feel hopeless in our present day reality.
