There’s something so magical about watching things grow from the ground. In this ethereal, ambient, avant garde song, Abdul Hakim Bilal is channeling the sounds of all of the taken for granted things that sprout and slowly weave their way from earth to sky. It’s called “I Was Awake When I Was Four,” and listening to the layers of melodies on this track and watching life emerge to delicately and gently makes me think about my own child self, and how I wished my perspective counted to the adults in my life. I think about my own kids, whose personalities began to emerge long before they could even speak a word, and how I strive to listen to them, and to respect their experience of the world. “I Was Awake When I Was Four” is off Bilal’s upcoming record Silene Undula which comes out on September 13 via BLIGHT — pre-order it here.
