“I’m cutting all ties with the herd” – if that doesn’t just sum up my experience of this year. Cutting ties with the medicating, the fakery, the distraction, the sadism, the masochism, the doublespeak that we’re all expected to live with. That’s what I hear when I hit play on this video for “Meat Suit” – the dilemma of someone who understands themself in a world that demands you pretend to be someone else. It’s from Belgian two-piece Doodseskader (“death squad”), who creates impossibly heavy sounds layered with soothing melodies and agitating vocals. They call themselves “sonic terror,” and that’s an accurate descriptor for the music that Tim De Gieter (Amenra, Every Stranger Looks Like You) and Sigfried Burroughs (Kapitan Korsakov, The K.) make together. “Meat Suit” is off their upcoming album MMXX : Year Zero that comes out this winter via Isolation Records – you can pre-order it here. I do feel like this is Year Zero, with so many souls escaping the earthly realm and the rest of us left here to fight the regimes who want to rebuild in their own rotten image. The audio turbulence that Doodseskader throws you into as soon as you hit play on this video, the maelstrom of grunge, sludge, hip hop, and screamo, captures the mental gymnastics we’ve been coached into all of our lives so that we don’t question our overlords. But if you can live with being an outsider, you can find real peace of mind. So hit play on “Meat Suit” and let it tear at your mind until you remember who you are…
