STEFAN KOIDL is an Austrian artist who paints nightmares. Using digital techniques and sculpture, Koidl captures the eerie, surreal quality of nightmares in his work – that sense of slow-motion fear and choking suspense that we’ve all suffered through in our minds. In his paintings, you’ll find the weird and the horrible coexisting peacefully. These are so accurate I can imagine what the dream would be like; for example, in the picture of the girl surrounded by sheet-covered figures, I can picture what my dream-self would do – I’d bump awkwardly past them, aware they were closing in on me, knowing I was moments away from suffocation and yet moving at an excruciatingly slow pace like my feet were buried in quicksand.
