In 1969 the BBC documentary series ‘Man Alive’ produced the programme ‘What’s the The Truth About Hells Angels & Skinheads’, an attempt to reveal genuine insight into these two youth cults. Both groups were instantly recognisable to the British public but for sure the man (or woman) on the street knew very little of why these gangs dressed like they did and what these gangs actually got up to.
The Hells Angels featured are from deep in the heart of the West Midlands and even by their own admission bear little resembelence to the United States version of the Hells Angels. Even the skinheads featured know they aren’t Hells Angels in the true sense, referring to them as “‘Grease”. Both sets get film time to discuss what they get up to but the most interesting parts are when they feature interviews with kids and their parents. Neither set of parents seems too bothered about their kids involvment – having seen the birth of the teddy boys they are already familiar with youth cults and are convinced that within a couple of years the kids will have grown up and moved on (although the ex teddy boy father of the skinhead featured still looks to be sporting the best quiff his thinning air can muster!)
