MX LONELY’s new single and video “Beauty Lasts For Never” has me reflecting on the unappreciated beauty of aging. It’s weird how I can see a woman in her 60s and be struck by her breathtaking silver beauty but see the same silver hairs poking out of my head with disgust. I know it’s because I’ve been conditioned by industry to see my own aging as a failure, but in truth, aging has brought me more confidence than I could have dreamed of in youth. It’s something I need to remember and “Beauty Lasts For Never” is reminding me of that. There’s a tragic longing in this song, a sound of wanting more but never reaching it that is calling me back to when I first found my love of both the grunge and the gaze that MX LONELY does so well. Sorrowful riffs and crashing percussion and bubbling melodies and plaintive vocals all suck me back into a place where I couldn’t have imagined what I’m doing today, and it makes me feel lucky to have survived everything it took to be here. This is a band I’d love to see live, and if you’re lucky enough to be in NYC you should be at Trans Pecos in Brooklyn this Saturday 11/23 to see them with High, Dish, and Blood Sports — get tickets here. Right now, watch their new video for “Beauty Lasts For Never.”
this one is about how beauty fades and how beautiful that is
