Portraits of the 80s Amsterdam Underground: MAX NATKIEL’s “Paradiso Stills” (1980-86)

MAX NATKIEL

Since I’m on a vintage punk portraits kick (sorry to Gen X, we are vintage now), I want to spotlight the brilliant photos from Dutch photographer MAX NATKIEL. He spent many a night at Amsterdam’s Paradiso club, and had the interest and foresight to capture the outcasts that gathered there to express themselves and be in community with each other. The punks, new-wavers, rockers, mods, Rastafarians, squatters, and metalheads, and skinheads who came to the legendary club for live music are all captured in his collection over over 1000 portraits he called the “Paradiso Stills (1980-86).” Check some of them out below!

Meghan MacRae grew up in Vancouver, Canada, but spent many years living in the remote woods. Living in the shadow of grizzly bears, cougars and the other predators of the wilderness taught her about the dark side of nature, and taught her to accept her place in nature's order as their prey. She is co-founder of CVLT Nation.
