1983 was the year that punks started listening to metal. It all started with Motörhead – they were the first metal band that was cool for punks to be into. Then we heard Venom & the rest was history! SoCal punks & SoCal metalheads started seeing more eye to eye. S.F. really set it off with Metallica & Exodus. I feel pretty lucky, I got to witness a killer Exodus gig in 1984 at the Mab on Broadway. Speed metal, as we called it, spread all over the world with force thanks to Slayer, Anthrax, & Possessed! Looking back, it was awesome the way that both movements of outsiders united to headbang as one! Get Thrashed is a must-see documentary that came out in 2007.
