As someone who’s written about underground music for the past decade, there’s nothing more exciting for me than a really fucking dope cross-genre collab. Such is the case with the new track from EMPRESS x THEGN. It’s a stunning sonic piece that takes Empress’s ominous doomy sludge and layers it with Thegn’s dark, soul-rending noise. “Libations (THEGN Remix)” is dedicated to the memory of Empress family and band member Brendan Gunn, and it’s an amazing tribute. It feels like a journey through the mire of grief. There’s an unbelievable heaviness to this song, but although it feels like it might crush me, there’s a glimpse of hope that reminds me of the strength I’m building as I carry it. Like there’s a place I’ll eventually reach where I can put some of the burden down, with the knowledge that I’ll always carry some of it with me.
