Our cultures have spent centuries trying to push our internal balance of feminine and masculine energies so far out of whack that we’re forced to live lives where we never feel whole. We’re either abusers or abused. When you read Quell’s inspiration for their new EP Endless, and feel their track “First Incident” punch you in your gut, once, twice, three times—the air of punishment on this release is easily explained. It’s the story of being forced so far into fear, anger, and violence that it becomes your personality. And even behind this thick, almost sound-proofed outer persona, there are remnants of the part that’s hiding, that’s been locked away, traumatized, forgotten. This energy whispers behind the facade of razor-sharp synths and blunt-force beats, calling to the listener like a cry for help. The Endless EP came out July 30th via Dero Arcade — you can get it here. Today we’re stoked to share the mind-melting video for Quell’s song “First Incident” with you below…
‘Endless’ was made during a period marked by a tumultuous acquaintance with a man of professional violence. The record probes the industrial systems and cycles of trauma that brought his violence to being. It presents a camp, hyperbolic machismo in its immediate sonic character, while processed recorded and found sounds and voices hint to a more complex reality.
