The first thought I had when I hit play on “Selfish Conception” from subservientdominance was: this is the sound of people throwing their energy away into the landfill that is social media. This power electronics/death industrial project from Doug DeWalt released an album called The Hollow via Eternal Nightmare and Innercity Uprising (Aus) earlier this year — get it here — and it’s a harrowing and disorienting sonic onslaught. It’s the sound of futility, of acquiescence, of cowering behind avatars pretending to engage in actions that make no difference to our actual lives. It reminds me that as long as we continue to confuse reality with virtuality, the powers that be can rest safely knowing their exploitative and violent systems will be safe. The revolution won’t be livestreamed.
