I have a vivid memory of seeing Cold Cave years ago at the first “outdoor” Fuck Yeah Fest in like 09/10 (I think it was the year they renamed it to “FYF” and it wasn’t at The Echo/Echoplex). I remember it because it was an outdoor stage and Sean and his homie Will were losing their minds dancing and it was a joy to behold. I’ve seen Cold Cave in many places and times, and they never cease to captivate. Every time I see them, the entire audience can’t help but dance to their bewitching darkwave. COLD CAVE just released a new full length, Passion Depression, and it’s got me dancing at my desk as I write this. Passion Depression is out now via Heartworm Press — get it here — and in my opinion it’s a record that stays true to Cold Cave’s sound but takes it to a deeper, darker, gothier level. It feels more urgent and ominous, more forceful, but that’s not taking anything away from the power of their previous releases. “Shadow Dance” feels like it’s beating in my chest. “Blackberries” is whispering corrupt somethings in my ear. “Hourglass” lifts me out of my despair. This is Cold Cave through the lens of the wicked world, and I feel like that’s what we need right now. If you need to dance away your stress and remember that the world keeps on keeping on, hit play on Passion Depression right here:
