Sometimes when I get too grounded in the rat race of this planet, I like my mind to drift up into the void of the universe so I can remember how tiny and insignificant we are. Our lives are specks. Our hates are motes. Our loves are grains. That’s the same kind of feeling I get from Salt Lake City post-rock band I Hear Sirens. Religion, imperialism, judgement, civilization – there’s no need to cling to any of it, because it means nothing. We’re nothing but a bacterial infection on Mother Earth. At the same time, there’s beauty in creation and in community, and if only we can find the balance with destruction we might have something worthwhile to leave behind.
