ONE: ILYLS
This show was at a super small DIY venue in Montreal, the band playing in the shot is I Love Your Lifestyle from Sweden. There were 3 bands on that night, with 12 total members and I think all of them minus the drummers were crowd surfing and playing instruments at some time. Total calamity. It was also a 35 degree summer night and the sweatiest show I’ve ever been to. I feel like this show really captures the energy.
TWO: TRICOT
Tricot is super high energy, and this shot is one of my personal favorites that I’ve ever made. They way their guitar player moves here made like some kind of weird composite face streak thing and that’s really rad.
THREE: BANE
This is from one of Bane’s last shows in Montreal. I’ve shot them like 20 times, and rather than the high energy gang-vocal, big air kind of shots they’re known for, this one is my favorite because it really captures the band in their late stage. Whenever I see this shot I remember thinking how tired they looked compared to the first time I had seen them. They announced their final tour shortly after this night.
FOUR: FAZE
Obviously, I’m a sucker for motion in my photographs, and more often than not I’m shooting long exposures at shows. This is the exact result I’m looking for most of the time – a really well-defined end point of the frame and all the motion leading up to it in one big streak. I find this way of shooting gives me a much higher chance of capturing the energy of a live performance, rather than a traditional high-speed shot.
FIVE: TENEMENT
Two things went very wrong at this show: 1. It was really dark and I didn’t bring a flash 2. The band broke a guitar string and no one had a replacement so they had to stop three songs in. I like this pic a lot because somewhere in the 7 minutes it took until the string broke I managed to time my shot so I could hijack the flash from a photog shooting beside me.
SIX: PUP
There is a lot going on in this photos. First, big air. Second, Jeff Rosenstock is on stage with a mic. Third, Jeff Rosenstock is on stage with a mic because their singer (who is also playing guitar and getting huge air) was so sick that they actually had to cancel the tour after this show so he could get medical attention (and eventually name their newest album, after the doctor telling him that ‘the dream is over’).
SEVEN: SINGLE MOTHERS
This is from a show a few years ago at Katacombes. For some reason, and this only seems to happen at this venue, there is a crowd of people who like to spray beer out of their mouths at the stage. Not sure why they do it, but the beer rain usually makes for some interesting results.
