Outsider culture has always been something that I saw as normal. Maybe it’s because at an early age, my mother moved me to Venice Beach and I was surrounded by the freaks of the world. It was not uncommon to see long-haired white dudes clad in leather racing down the streets on their Harleys. Deeper than that, these men and women were also fathers and mothers, so their children ended up being our friends, skateboard partners, and class mates. Given these facts, bikers and everything that came with them were just another part of the weirdo mosiac that we knew as Venice Beach. What’s interesting is that while I was living my life on the West Coast of the States, Pulsating Paula was on the East Coast documenting bikers from her point of view. What is so compelling about her photography is that her photos bleed honesty, passion, and a high level of respect for her subjects. I’m not sure if she knew she was capturing history, but she did, which is why CVLT Nation salutes Pulsating Paula for saving a piece of Americana for us all!
