Despite the richness of waking up alive, hungry, sore, swollen, groggy, and crusty every morning, sometimes I look in the mirror and say, how can I create something that other people will Like today? And I feel despondent when I realize that I’ve never bothered to master the cute angles and pout and squat for the camera that other people seem to be so good at. And I’m probably just going to sit at my desk in a comfortable and homely outfit. And I’ve forgotten how to do my makeup. Then I realize that it’s fucking stupid to let any of those things hold me back from enjoying the fuck out of my simple, invisible day.
It’s the cameras and masks swarming on the new LEOPARDO video for “Selfish Spoiled Child” that’s reminding me just how vapid it is to need that validation from anyone. Their psychedelic art-rock sound perfectly fits the mess social media has made of our self-worth and self-perception.
