The older I get, the more I realize that the real purpose of life is to find myself amidst the clutter of my life experiences, especially the ones that demanded I turn my back on myself in order to survive them. Maybe that’s why I’m so attracted to music that scrapes back the walls of numbness I’ve built and reveals the glistening, pulsating, bloody entrails of the unapologetic child I once was so that I can sew her back up again. NyreDolk’s new single “Martyrliv” is exactly that kind of catharsis; the guttural hiss riding ruinous riffs and cataclysmic percussion lets me unearth her little buried body so I can breath life back into her, even if it’s a terrifying process. But this music isn’t here to numb or placate, it’s here to sonically shear skin from flesh and make you feel. It’s off their debut record Barndommens hjem that’s out now on Styglyd Records — get vinyl here. Get ready to ravage your mind with some of the sickest black metal punk I’ve heard in ages as you hit play on the rad new video for NyreDolk’s “Martyrliv,” directed by Daniel Liversage…
NyreDolk is a voice for those who feel overlooked in a childhood marked by chaos, psychological violence, and unclear relationships.
“Barndommens hjem” is a raw and honest exploration of the theme of social heritage. The album delves into the complex relationships across generations and the scars that many carry throughout life. It speaks of trauma and how individuals choose to either repeat or break free from it.Each track is written from authentic experiences and is based on different perspectives or viewpoints across generations. A framework that may explain future oppression and choices that weigh on future generations.
The album climaxes in a utopian desire for love and forgiveness, understanding and recognition. Something some people already take for granted, but for others, something they could not imagine surpassing them in their wildest fantasies.
When I saw NyreDolk perform for the first time, and witnessed their unmatched energy, I knew I wanted to work with them in one way or the other. I reached out and told them I was willing to help them out with concert photos, but this was in January 2023, and they kind of went off the radar after that. Then in April 2024 they asked me if I wanted to do a music video, and we started developing from there.
At that time I had only done a few small on-the-fly film projects, but I knew I wanted to expand my scope for this one. I got to hear the album in August and immediately fell for ‘MARTYRLIV’. I knew from the start that the fact that everyone is masked was going to play a key role, and after talking to the band about their thoughts behind the album, I wanted to try and portray the idea about battling and coming to terms with the darker parts of your soul, often stemming from childhood trauma.
Working with friends, it was quite arduous at times to make the ideas in my head come to life, but we had a lot of fun and learnt a ton in the process. My favourite shot is definitely the first (and last) of the video, rigging an old selfie-ring light to a staircase and fogging up the room. I am very happy to have been able to play a part in the NyreDolk-saga, and am very excited to see what the future has in store for them. I cannot name any other act out there that do what they do.
