Korine is a band that’s never made a song I didn’t love. But that also comes with high expectations, so while I was excited to listen to their new record A Flame In The Dark, I also knew that I needed it to be good. When I say my body coursed with joy as the first track, “Screaming In The Night,” traveled into my eardrums and all through my nervous system like a jolt of electric new wave lightning, I’m not exaggerating. Just in the first few seconds of the first song, I knew that I was going to adore this album as much, maybe more, than their existing catalog that I return to time and again. Trey makes melodies and beats that make me want to dive deep into my emotions and dance my pain away, and Morgy’s vocals are the north star I need to follow while I los myself in their music. A Flame In The Dark really feels like the album I need right now, a beacon of sonic hope in dark times. Every song feels like an activation and sends shivers down my spine, like Korine’s trying to pull my energy up out of the mud into the sky, and I so appreciate it. I don’t know if that was their intention when they created these songs, but they have the most uplifting effect on me.
I can’t really pick a favorite from the 8 bangers on this record — they all have a slightly different blend of post punk, new wave, emo, and darkwave, and they’re all anthems. But if I had to pick one song that made stop writing this feature so I could pre-order the album, it’s “The Line.” But like I said, this entire album is breathtaking. You can pre-order it yourself now on gorgeous vinyl — it ships March 28th via Born Losers Records, get it here.
