How wild is it that we traded our ability to ensure our own survival for a salary that decreases in value faster than it scales? We spend hours every day working for a digital tender that gets us less food and shelter today than it did yesterday. We work harder, as our spending power decreases. That’s fucked. And on top of all of it, a majority of us need to put on a mask of agreeability, shove our real selves as far into the dark recesses of our shadows that we can get, and pretend we love it. Capitalism, eh. But CHONCY’s made a song that offers some musical relief and reminds us that we don’t have to be the self-important groveling assholes that some of our forebears were. “Company Man” is that self-important parent who knows you’re too weird to amount to anything in the “real world.” He’s that Tate-admiring, Audi-driving (or Hyundai-driving?) douchebag cutting people off in the Starbucks drive-thru. He’s been the decades-long inspiration for punks and misfits to make music that will piss him the fuck off. CHONCY has made a bouncy, empowering fuck you anthem in “Company Man” that reminds me there’s still joy to be found in late-stage capitalism! It’s off their record Community Chest that comes out February 25th via Feel it Records — pre-order it here or here. Right now, hit play on “Company Man” and share it with your co-workers 🙂
