What if this world is all we have? There are no more than a handful of humans existing beyond our atmosphere, and there are billionaires building spaceships and planning to escape the impending doom that the rest of us plebs will experience. But what if that search is in vain, that dream of colonizing the moon or Mars is a pipe dream, and there’s no real escape from the hell we’re creating out of this priceless, precious planet? What if those stories about space flights and moon colonies are a distraction, and the real colonization is happening in a new underwater Atlantis? Those are the twists and turns my mind is taking while I listen to the new album from Spelljammer called Abyssal Trip. This doom trio takes us to the depths of our own planet, the places we don’t aspire to live in, to see just how deep, cold, and dark it can get. The closer we get to the planet’s core, the more mystery we encounter, to the point where we’d rather shoot ourselves in a capsule 70 miles into space because it’s easier than going six miles below the surface of the ocean. For that, you’ll need this crushingly heavy doom album, so hop in and descend into places that humanity hasn’t been able to touch. Abyssal Trip comes out tomorrow, February 26th, via RidingEasy Records, and you can pre-order it here. But you can listen to it in full right here:
