Chicago’s Dead Sun may have created my favorite record of the month. I’d say the year, but please understand that I’m a music journalist and I listen to an unholy amount of music in a year. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m absolutely captivated by A/B. As someone who appreciates the depth of sound and psyche that shoegaze and slowcore invoke in me, I need the emotional release of music like this. It digs under my protective layers and strikes the motherlode of pain hiding deep inside me. I’m the kind of person who intellectualizes my emotions, but when they’re dark and sad my mind goes silent, so music like the track we’re streaming today, “Solitary Ideal,” releases the pressure and speaks to me on a soul level. Dead Sun are releasing A/B, their debut full-length, on August 21st via Flesh and Bone Records – pre-order it here. I’m really encouraging you to order this stunning record not only because it rocks, but also because they’ve promised to pledge all profits from the record to the NAACP and the Chicago Community Bond Fund. Dead Sun makes something beautiful of the pain of existence, and we can, too.
