Today we’re traveling warp speed into the world of NYC-based artist EZ. EZ’s artistic persona is inspired by Mecha, a genre of Japanese manga and anime focused on technology and transhumanism. EZ is a master inventor, a cyborg dancer, and a mecha doll — a human being whose entire being is merged with the mechanical. The sculptures and characters EZ creates are a soft landing for our futuristic fears; a gentle face on the skull-crushing strength lurking beneath. I don’t know how I feel about a future where men’s girlfriends could pop their heads like a pimple, but, to each their own. What I do know is EZ’s vision is mesmerizing, and takes my mind’s eye on a wild journey into science fiction, while every day we creep closer to the fantasy becoming reality.
I self-proclaim as a Mecha doll; it comes from the word Love doll, a synthesis of my body in the physical realm and digital entity as well as a spiritual realm. As an extension of myself, the creation filled my void, as without it I feel vulnerable. I get over-consumed and inspired by everything around me so I tend to withdraw and sometimes I am quite empty. It’s one of my mechanisms of coping with that tendency in real life. Like a digital shield.
