I love it when two genres come together in some genius’s brain and they fit so naturally they make a new, third genre. COWER describes themselves as gothic noise, and now I can’t imagine a world without this awesome blend of gothic rock and noise rock. Their new single “Summoner” has the grating, caustic edge of noise and the dark, melancholy heart of goth, and the whole sound is so confronting, so nihilistic, so romantic all at once. When I look at COWER’s members, I’m not surprised they’ve produced this chimera — they’re notoriously creative and prolific UK underground musicians: Tom Lacey (Yards, The Ghost of a Thousand), Wayne Adams (Petbrick, JAAW, Big Lad) and Gareth Thomas (USA Nails, The Eurosuite). Their new record Celestial Devastation comes out via Human Worth on February 2nd — pre-order it here — and today we’re excited to be sharing their video premiere for “Summoner” below!
Directed and shot by Tom Brewins in 1 take, we wanted to created a performance video that felt woozy, and slightly otherworldly. “Summoner” is about peak tech-bro fanboy worship of Musk, silicon valley and the future we were all promised but was never delivered. The ruiner of men essentially – so we wanted to shoot Tom [Lacey, vocalist] in a way that appeared strong at first and then gradually broke him down as he becomes soaked in water, confused by smoke and blinded by flashing lights.
