Feel the Intoxicating Blackened Folk Drone of BLACK ALEPH “Live at Lazybones”

Black Aleph has swept me up in their blackened folk drone and is holding my nervous system hostage with their dissonant strings and caustic fuzz. I’m watching their video capturing the band live at Lazybones in Sydney, in July 2022. These three musicians weave Persian classical and ritual sounds together with a blackened doom sound for music that captivates me immediately. Their debut album comes out late 2023/early 2024 via Art As Catharsis — stay tuned here for info. Right now, check out this live performance from Black Aleph and let yourself be carried away on their darkly divine drone…

Black Aleph are a trio hailing from Sydney, and featuring Timothy Johannessen on daf (ex-Mehr Ensemble), Lachlan R. Dale on guitar (Hashshashin), and Peter Hollo on cello (Tangents).

Their sound is a swirling mass of drone — a dense cloud of saturated overdrive, driving cello and pounding daf, drawing from ritual music, doom metal, and Persian classical music.

Black Aleph made their debut as a duo performing at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 2018. In recent years they’ve become a trio with the addition of Peter Hollo on cello.
