When it comes to infusing sound with emotion, AMENRA is a master of it. So these three covers they did in 2021 of Portishead’s “Roads,” This Mortal Coil’s “Song to the Siren,” and Nick Drake’s “Day is Done” are a profound listening experience. It feels like they took the original feeling of each track, stripped it bare, and amplified the pure emotion of it. They’re the best kind of covers — a tribute to the spirit of each gorgeous song, reinventing the sonic experience without distorting it, and from a place of artistic respect and integrity. CHVE’s voice somehow perfectly captures three distinct vocal expressions while remaining his alone; it’s kind of mind-blowing. I can’t pick a favorite of the three, but I can say I’d love and cherish a full LP of Amenra covers — I need more!
