BABEL MAP is a band that I can’t put into a box, and it’s because they’re layering influences that come through clearly but also equally, with no one sound overpowering another. I’m listening ot their single “Nosebleed,” and I’m enraptured by beats with a gothic edge and melodic post-punk riffs overlaid with an experimental shoegaze fuzz. It feels human and of the flesh, but also otherworldly and cybersonic at the same time. It’s off their new record Teeth that came out this month via Lost Future Records — get it here. The video feels like a collective fever dream where we all participate in a bland grey cubicled existence that captures our reality from cradle to grave. Looking for an exit takes you to yet another industrial white floor. It’s eerie and unsettling because it’s the world we’ve made for ourselves in the “developed” west, and there may be no way out besides apocalypse. Okay it’s getting dark in here, time for you to watch our premiere of BABEL MAP’s video for “Nosebleed”:
Teeth: the structure of enamel coated bone used for survival and defense in life, yet left intact, telling identification in the afterlife.
Teeth is about showing your teeth, but also leaving a permanent piece of yourself behind for the world to reflect on.
