Since fear is an emotion that a lot of the music and art we cover here channels, this post seemed like something that would trigger the same level of unsettling, hair-raising terror that a The Body show does. Ming Cu is an Indonesian woman who breeds tarantulas for a living. As a result, she currently lives with approximately 1,500 tarantulas, and she treats them like they are her pets. Admittedly, tarantulas are probably the cuddliest spiders out there, all fuzzy and cute, but they’re also one of the most feared spiders. Watching Ming Cu lovingly hold a giant tarantula as she talks to the camera is pretty surreal, especially the absent minded way she lets is wander around on her arm and hand. If you’re an arachnophobe, I wouldn’t watch this.

Letting a docile tarantula crawl over your arm is not a big deal. I’d much rather deal with a random tarantula than a random dog. Only one of these animals can crush your bones and seriously put you in the hospital. Tarantulas are much smaller and easier to handle if they’re upset. If worse comes to worse the most you’ll get is a painful bite that will swell a bit, sure it’s not fun, but a dog can crush your hand and put you into surgery. There are certain venomous tarantulas that will make you sick and possibly put you in the hospital, but you won’t find most people holding those (unless they’re idiots), nor do we have any of those species in the united states. This type of fear is purely cultural. If you’re not afraid of dogs then you should be totally fine with tarantulas and spiders.
