ALT R & B

Experience the Out This World Shapeshifting Blissed Out Grime-Alt R&B of JAWNINO ’40’

Something happened to me when I first heard Jawnino’s new LP 40 on True Panther and Worldwide Unlimited. Let me tell you what happened: I became instantly hooked and ran out to buy the vinyl (I have listened to it at least once a day). Imagine if So Solid Crew, The Streets, Space Afrika, Mad Professor, JME, Roll Deep Crew, and Rainy Miller combined to make a record dedicated to the Man Demin the Endz broadcasting from a universe that has yet to be discovered. I love how this artist can twist melody around glitched-out soundscapes that become earworms. I know that he is speaking for young creative youth who are creating art for themselves through their eyes and not for the high street. So here is the deal, bump his tune “redstripe interlude” and you will realize that dreams do come true and that they come in the form of audio portraits that all might not overstand. As I bliss out to the song “Wind (ft. Cold),” I think about how so many cultures make up what we know as the ever-changing Youth Culture of London. Jawnino is speaking for the youth that don’t have a voice and he is saying things that need to be heard by all. The production you will encounter on this album is beyond awesome.

I was playing famous You was playing stand off in the corner of the room I thought it was news I didn’t mean to assume Pain that you elude the same pain I felt When you rose the blade I couldn’t move I wanted to lose You wanted to two’s on what could’ve been blues I was at the station with a muse Rizla and a Red Stripe and everything to prove Needles on the pavement make me think of all the bliss I used to flake but now it’s fliz Playing with the silence used to pray for what it is I thought you said there’s beauty in the violence cause there is I didn’t go to prom but sold a Gucci belt that did Beanie with Egyptian font I would’ve held you in the wind But I ain’t hearing anything It just is what it is It is what it is [Cold] Let it be let it be Let it be let it be Let it be let it be Let it be let there be light Let it be let it be Let it be let it be Let it be let it be Let it be let there be light

40 pushes the listener to embrace the new new and gives a middle to sonic boundaries that the gatekeepers want to uphold. Real talk, “Westfield (ft. Kibo & James Massiah)” is the new grime-infused anthem that I have on rewind. Blasting this record reminds me of stepping into an Underground rave in London circa 2001.”sentfromheaven” is a subversive hit that is one giant hook — it’s a call and response jam. Jawnino, I want you to know that I’m stoked that you created an album that speaks to me on so many levels. 40 is an audio statement of freedom that will live with me for IVER and IVER. From the sound systems of South London to the streets of Brixton “40wave” (BIG TUNE Fun TIMES!) is the wave we all should ride!
