SCHEDULE 1 makes energetic post punk with emphasis on the punk, just the way I like it! Today we’re premiering their rad new video for the single “Drifting,” and after a couple of listens I know this is gonna be a song that wakes me up playing in my head. It’s about the disillusionment of grief, how it untethers you from your world and leaves you drifting — an experience I’m all to familiar with. And the energy of this song is exactly the kind of music that got me through my own stages of grief: acknowledging the heavy search for a purpose that feels like it’s been lost while still pushing the listener to move and explore. Totally different genre, but I listened to Sparta’s Porcelain over and over again to help me feel and get through it. Today, I would listen to SCHEDULE 1’s record Crucible for emotional catharsis and to remind me to keep moving forward. They tap into the melancholy of post punk, the energy of oi!, the subversiveness of punk, and blend it all into a massive, impressive sound. After an experience of loss, one may resist the new reality and move aimlessly, without purpose, trying to salvage fragments of the past. When this happens to you, it can feel like you are only “drifting through a wasteland”. The song describes personal grief, and the collapse of a valuable creative culture due to gentrification.
