What do you get when two lovers of black metal, sludge, doom, and post-rock come together to create a post punk project? I can tell you what you get—you get Grieving Sea. The brainchild of Void and Giorgio Barroccu, co-founders of Brucia Records, Grieving Sea’s music is thoroughly post punk, but I can also hear hints of the heavy genres they’re connoisseurs of. The lo-fi production adds a grittiness that gives me the feeling of being in a small DIY space absorbing their sound live. They’ve captured the steady, addictive beats and melodies of classic post punk and amplified the dissonance to keep the listener on their toes. As a result, these songs are melancholy and uplifting at the same time, and it’s an album I’m happy to keep hitting play on over and over again.
