Most of my life, I’ve thought about our demise as a species. I was raised in the 1980s David Suzuki birth-of-recycling-era and I was brainwashed into taking responsibility for turning this planet into a garbage pile until I understood that while I did have a part to play, much of the public campaign was put into place to make sure we didn’t hold the real destructive forces responsible. Like if I separated my glass and my aluminum it would somehow balance out our rapacious clearcutting of 15 billion trees every year when they’re our best defense against disastrous climate change. And while I realize that Garage Of Broken Dreams didn’t necessarily intend their 55-track triple-album Fashion Party to be an environmental opus, that’s where my mind is going as I listen to it. It’s a gorgeous mind-meld of punk and psych and post-punk that brings a sense of levity into my rebellion. It’s got me laughing at our puny human attempt to control everything and everyone. Like a sandbag in a hurricane, we’re constantly being convinced that one more barrier will prevent us from being washed away into oblivion. When if it’s our obliteration the planet wants, it’s our obliteration we will get. Fashion Party came out last week and you can order it here, and today we’re excited to share the video they made for their single “The Holy Spirit” – and if you were wondering what sparked my oceanic imagination, it’s this video celebrating the existence of the holy spirit in the earthly womb we all came from. So if you’re looking for some punk you can really let your mind wander to, enjoy Garage Of Broken Dreams…
