Video Premiere: STRANGEWEATHER “Syrinx”

Portland’s STRANGEWEATHER are getting ready to release their new album Of the Reeds on March 31st, 2018, and in anticipation of their unleashing of the bats we’ve got the honor of premiering their video for the track “Syrinx”! Taking a different perspective on the Greek myth of Syrinx, the wood nymph pursued by the god Pan, “Syrinx” brings an age-old escape story to the 21st century with a gorgeous doom folk soundtrack. This track is haunting, melancholy and heavy, and opens an escape portal for the mind. Stay tuned to Strangeweather’s bandcamp and label Bandits Never Die for more info about the album release!

Portland band Strangeweather seek to re-tell the story of Syrinx.

Post-punk, chamber rock, and doom folk are a few ways to describe the music of Strangeweather, who are getting ready to release their third album Of the Reeds March 31 on Bandits Never Die. Working with video producer Caitlin Indermaur, they’ve created an epic eight minute video that retells the ancient Greek myth of Syrinx from a feminist perspective. In the classic telling, Pan is pursuing the wood nymph Syrinx who prays to the river to conceal her from his unwanted advances. Using reeds to breathe underwater, she is transformed by the river into reeds, which Pan then cuts to make his flute, or syrinx. He is often depicted as a sad lover mourning the loss of his “love.” Strangeweather‘s re-telling asks Syrinx for her side of the story.
Filmed on the Sandy River in Oregon, the video captures the region in the early autumn. There are also scenes shot at Straight Blast Gym in Portland, OR, featuring Jiu Jitsu practitioners training as the music narrates this story of survival, transformation, grief and feminine strength.
