While scrolling through my latest favourite tumblr, 80’s Hard Rock & Metal, I realized who invented the “duck face” so popular in celebrity/everyone’s selfies! It was the 80s/early 90s hair metal heartthrobs who first popularized this totally obnoxious sucky-cheeks and protruding lips look in the pages of magazines like Hit Parader and Circus. Now, I love me some Mötley Crüe, but everything else about hair and glam metal can pretty much go to hell – however, I absolutely LOVE scrolling through these old scans of the teeny bopper pinups of metal’s sordid pop past. I just know that all these guys started out by raiding their big sister’s wardrobe and copying her massive hair, with maybe just a little more lift. Bare chests aside, I don’t really understand how women of the day found this cross-dressing misogynist thing attractive. Give me a dude that lets his balls breathe any day. Although I do enjoy knowing that my homie Drew Bernstein was responsible for many of these vinyl and mesh outfits. I just know he’s up there like, I can’t believe I used to wear a codpiece and chaps out in public! Love you man. Anyway, if you don’t examine the past you’re doomed to repeat it, so check out some of these magazine pages below and see the rest on 80’s Hard Rock & Metal.
