The Magical Forest Sculptures of Spencer Byles

If you’re like me and a huge Game of Thrones fan, then maybe you’ll understand why Spencer Byles’ sculptures are so captivating. The forest holds such beauty and mystery, and Byles’ work in the French forests of La Colle Sur Loup, Villeneuve Loubet and Mougins is like something created by the Children in Martin’s books, as a tribute to the ancient gods that flow through the veins of the trees like sap.

If you’re like me and a huge Game of Thrones fan, then maybe you’ll understand why Spencer Byles‘ sculptures are so captivating. The forest holds such beauty and mystery, and Byles’ work in the French forests of La Colle Sur Loup, Villeneuve Loubet and Mougins is like something created by the Children in Martin’s books, as a tribute to the ancient gods that flow through the veins of the trees like sap. I imagine coming across these massive shapes on a crisp, cold night, and the thrill and fear I would feel at their alien appearance. Byles meant for the sculptures to be extensions of the plants around them, as if naturally occurring, or created by creatures who had a better understanding and grasp of Nature’s power. More than that, I find the idea of living in a forest with the sole purpose of spending each day weaving these gorgeous creations irresistible. He spent a year working on them, and made dozens of these monolithic works. Let your imagination wander as you check out these photos of Byles’ stunning works…
