Outsiders like us have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. Maybe you’re excited about it like a diamond commercial, maybe you’re pissed about it because it reminds you of your ex, and maybe you detest anything that reeks of Christianity and commodification. Whatever your persuasion, we have an objective reason for you to be stoked this frenching season. Los Angeles darling TALEEN KALI drops Covered, an aptly named EP with fresh new takes on classic songs by My Bloody Valentine, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins and more. Her dark take on these five love songs draws you in with its fierce, femme vocals, oscillating between the light and dark, the delicate and powerful. Ethereal and haunting, the album also features heavy breakbeat drums and swirling guitars, coalescing into a dark, haunting take on the originals.
TALEEN’s debut LP Flower Of Life came out last March produced by Smashing Pumpkins‘ Jeff Schroeder and with a sold-out album release show and 2 national tours under their belt, the band headlined Dum Dum Fest this summer before being invited on a support tour with Ringo Deathstarr. They’ve been getting a lot of radio love — Henry Rollins has played them on KCRW almost every week since the record came out, following up with a remix album in 2024.
The release party is Saturday, February 8th at the Love Song Bar in Los Angeles in tandem with a Bandcamp online listening party before the band heads to SXSW. This event will be FREE to those impacted by the L.A. wildfires, and 25% of regular tickets will be donated directly to GoFundMe campaigns of families who lost their homes. The band will also have test pressings and rarities available for sale, 100% of which will be donated.
