NSFW: CVLT Nation Interviews VLF Laboratories

If the typical expressions of sex on the porn device we call the internet bores you, then it’s time to dig deeper into the shadows and into the underground work that film maker Marco Malattia of VLF Laboratories is making. I hunted him down and discussed with him the varied layers of what VLF Laboratories does to take porn back to a more primal state.

How did this project come to fruition? Do you see your work more as ritual or porn?

The project was born five years ago from the synthesis of my previous activities; no intention or calculation, if not the desire to reduce everything to one. I see my work for what it is. I leave the distinctions or disquisitions on what a project is or is not to those who do nothing but think about what others are doing.

I find your work refreshing, as I have always found appeal in the sexual content of horror movies rather than mainstream porn. Do you see your work as more ritual than pornography? Is this more of a vision of “anti-porn”? What does the term dis-functional porn mean to you?

Pornography, since it showed a commercial value, has lost the nature of the origins and has become a mere genre whose sole purpose is the onanistic activities of the ordinary user.
Our dysfunctionality is this: to not concede anything to the masturbatory gesture in favor of scoptophilia in itself.
You cannot make a ranking of importance between the various elements that make up the project.
“Anti-porn” is, paradoxically, the commonly understood commercial porn. Mine is the true porn, in intention and attitude.

Throughout occult history, masks are an important tool in rituals, what is the significance in your choice of masks?

The masks in the first instance delete the recognizable traits of the girls involved: I’m interested in the woman’s logos, the body as a vehicle.
The masks increase the alternatives applied to the human being, and erase the stupidity of fidelity to oneself.
With our depersonalized bodies, we abolish the ego boundaries and our relationship with reality by living our idios kosmos and synthesizing a structural koinos kosmos represented by V.L.F. products.

In some of the videos there is an androgynous quality to your models – is this intentional to blur those lines?

The girls are not selected for the appearance of their bodies, but according to the attitude that may be coincident to a certain point in my personal situation – in this case, they don’t remain in the project for a long time; or to one of the guidelines of the project, and in this case their presence is longer.
The physical aspect is only a coincidence of little value.

What role does music play in your work?

Each element that makes up the V.L.F. universe has the same value: it is an amalgam in which the result –  changing a single element – would result invalidated.
Images, music and theory are born in the same moment, and they fix themselves spontaneously. Each element is important in the same manner.

The adoration of death is a common theme in your work; do you see this darker imagery as more of an invocation to the shadow self?

We do not invoke anything but ourselves. Death is an omnipresent element in life, such as sex, hunger or any other bodily function. This is what we celebrate without invoking it; We Are Death. We simply highlight this element sometimes.

Some of your work is described as a celebration of the flesh; in modern cultures this is being done on more of a surface level, with the proliferation of tattoos and other forms of body modification moving into the mainstream. Why do you think this is not being reflected on a deeper level, and youth cultures are seeking out vanilla hook-ups on Tinder rather than seeking deeper sexual gnosis? Why do you think Western culture has such a problem talking about sex?

You have difficulties in talking about what you do not know. Western culture has always eliminated sex in favor of other elements that make up the human experience. The result is precisely the search of alternative methods, such as body mods and so on.
The affirmation of self through the body has many ways to externalization. We try to combine the physical experiences in a single current.
There is no difference between one thing and another.

What other corners of sex magick and energetic expression are you looking to explore in the future?

It is impossible to define the possible future development of a project like V.L.F., as we abolish with our actions any connection to determinism in favor of an aesthetic and conceptual permanent revolution.
