More than any other American city, San Francisco was the mecca for the anarcho punk scene during the early and mid 80’s. When I was 15, I made my move up to SF from Los Angeles—and when I look back on it, this move changed the way I looked at the world and my part in it.
The first thing that impressed me about the scene up there was the sense of community that all the SF punks shared. It went way beyond music – it seemed like the punks were family. Crucifix was the glue that brought all of the other bands together. When I first heard Crucifix, they blew my mind – it felt like these humans lived everything they sung about 100%. Also, as musicians, these dudes brought the ruckus and everyone gave them respect because Crass signed them. During this period, my friend Drew Bernstein (who would later become my legal guardian) became their guitar player.
The spirit of 1984 is one of the driving forces behind CVLT Nation, and unity amongst the outcasts is still important to me. It’s been 42 years since CRUCIFIX screamed “Peace or Annihilation” – is the world a better place? These words aren’t hollow; the struggle really does continue! The powers that be are trying to dehumanize us and numb us from state violence and state control!
Today we’re excited to share the next CVLT Nation Sessions, a record that’s just as important now as it was four decades ago: CRUCIFIX’s Dehumanization. This comp features some of the best anarcho/d-beat bands doing it right now: S.H.I.T., GOLPE, NO TIME, AUS ROTTEN, BASUKO, CRISTØ, STREET GLOVES, TRAUMATIZER, NIGHTFEEDER, HEZ, FUTURE OF DESPAIR, DETHFOX, PRAYER POSITION, and FINAL DOSE. Listen and download for free below.
When we recorded Dehumanization in 1983 we never imagined it existing in the future. We never imagined the future very much at all in fact – we just did what we did in the moment. So it’s gratifying and humbling to know that something we made so long ago can still resonate in the present. Our many thanks to the bands that contributed to this compilation and to CVLT Nation for making it happen.
–Crucifix, 2025

CVLT Nation is releasing the next in our classic compilation series The CVLT Nation Sessions, this time the breathtaking anarcho punk album Dehumanization by Crucifix. Originally released in 1983, Dehumanization was an important historical moment for American punk and a battle cry against the imperialist war machine. Over four decades later, we still witness genocide and tragedy raining down on oppressed peoples in Palestine, Sudan, Burkina Faso, India, Congo, and more. Many of these devastating conflicts are funded by western taxpayers and lining the pockets of global war profiteers. Crucifix’s Dehumanization railed against war and exploitation in the 80s, and we need this energy more than ever before in 2025.
