Corbin making an EOTYL-worthy post-punk record was not on my bingo card for 2025, but as soon as I heard the dissonant guitar tones and rallying percussion kick in on “Cry Out In Pain,” I was like holy fuck, Spooky Black’s been listening to The Cure. But it’s still Corbin; it’s almost like he was always making post-punk but I just didn’t hear it until now. Mourn really coalesced his sound for me acorss genres, Ghost With Skin leaned into an almost pop version, and now Crisis Kid has landed him solidly in CVLT Nation territory, and as someone who deeply respects his artistry, I’m stoked to have him here!
The melancholy melodies woven through iridescent guitars and slowed down like it’s all flowing into my ears like thick codeine syrup is the perfect remedy for the fear, sadness, and frustration that characterizes each day of this downward spiral the men who lead our countries are taking us on. But as I see them bring out the worst in us as they drag us into the pits of Hell, albums like this give me the strength to cling to a branch of hope and stop my own fall. Crisis Kid is a reminder that there’s a balance, that evil isn’t inevitable, that we can help each other instead of choke each other.
Crisis Kid is self-released and you can get it from Corbin’s store here or stream it here. Corbin is on tour right now with a few May dates left, check those out below.
